Thailand Tops Japanese Golden Week Travel Choices

Agoda data reveals a surge in Japanese tourists favouring Thailand during the extended Golden Week holiday.

As Japan's Golden Week approaches, search data from the digital travel platform Agoda indicates a surge in interest for travel to Thailand, solidifying its position as the second most popular international destination for Japanese tourists, after South Korea. This year’s extended Golden Week, from 29 April to 6 May, offers Japanese travellers an expanded window for travel possibilities.

Thailand remains the only Southeast Asian destination in the top three, more searched than Taiwan (#3), the United States (#4), and Vietnam (#5).

Agoda's insights reveal a 60% increase in searches for Thailand by Japanese travellers from January to mid-March of 2024, compared to the same period last year, highlighting a growing fascination with Thailand's diverse attractions and rich culture.

Further analysis of Japanese travellers' preferences shows new entries among the top destination choices within Thailand. While perennial favourites like Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Koh Samui continue to be popular, this year sees Chonburi (#9) and Khao Lak (#10) emerging as new favourites, reflecting Japanese travellers' expanding interest in Thailand's multifaceted experiences.

Pierre Honne, Senior Country Director, Thailand at Agoda, said, "Japanese travellers are exploring more of Thailand, extending trips beyond its traditional hotspots like Bangkok and Pattaya to discover Chonburi and the coastline of Khao Lak. Agoda’s travel platform offers an array of accommodations, flights, and activities to cater to the dynamic travel preferences of Japanese travellers.”

Agoda's commitment to diverse travel options allows travellers to find the best deals on hotels, flights, and engaging activities all on one platform—perfect for those planning a memorable Golden Week escapade.
