Manufacturers want more level playing field

More refinements should be made to the new automobile tax structure to ensure greater fairness to all technologies in order to encourage more development and minimise increases in retail prices.

Toyota Camry Hybrid (left) and BMW 3 Series diesel version both emit about the same CO2 levels but the German car is not eligible for lower tax because it uses a conventional engine.

While using carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions instead of engine size has been lauded by the industry, there remain several unclear points in the new system.

Last did read a report from a Norwegian university that Eco cars are not Eco at all.

The fabrication and dismantling process give much more pollution then a "standard" car.
Second the "profits" from driving electric are shown to optimistic by car builders.

I think this new tax deal is nothing more then just a other way to cash more tax from the car owners.

You must look at all the process, from the extraction to the km you do and even the CO2 needed to build the car. If you want to promote clean cars you must take care also to NOX, dust, etc. An electric car produce about 25 % less CO2 if the electricity used come from oil, gas, coal. But it becomes interesting if the electricity come from Hydroelectric, solar, wind, nuclear, etc. In France 80 % of the electricity is made like that, so it makes sense for the government to give a bonus of about 280 000 bahts when you buy an electric car (like a Renault Zoe that you can get for 515 000 bahts).

The Japanese style of doing business is to socialize with your potential partner many many times to get to know them well and only after a solid relationship is established do they talk business.

There is a reason why taxes favored certain brands in the past and why the new taxes still favor a certain few brands also.
