Jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck, who tinkered masterfully with rhythm and style and won millions of new fans around the world for the quintessentially American musical genre, died Wednesday of heart failure at the age of 91.

Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, pictured in 2009, whose experiments in rhythm and style helped win millions of new jazz fans around the world, died Wednesday of heart failure, his manager said. He was 91.

A day shy of his 92nd birthday, Brubeck died in a hospital in Norwalk, Connecticut, his manager Russell Gloyd said.

Goodbye Dave Brubeck, you were one of the best.

As D2 writes, his Take Five was wonderful, actually the whole album.

Brubeck had gone to Africa they say to study African rhythms, which was what Take Five incorporated.

RIP to a jazz icon. I first saw him at university fifty years ago. I am one of those whom he educated. There is a timeless quality to his best work.
