The SET-listed Thai Union Frozen Products Plc (TUF) has become Thailand's first company to sign the UN Global Compact, an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable and socially responsible policies.
Thiraphong Chansiri, president of the world's leading tuna producer, said by that joining the compact, TUF is showing its commitment to 10 international standards and sound business practices in the areas of human rights, labour standards, environmental practices and anti-corruption.
"Living up to the UN Global Compact will ensure TUF and all its global brands and businesses remain reliable providers of safe and quality seafood products, a valuable investment for shareholders, a dedicated corporate citizen in our communities and, most importantly, an employer of choice for our global workforce of 32,000 people," he said.
Sustainability director Wit Soontaranun said TUF has been working with its brands and companies in the US and Europe to establish high standards for its workplace codes of conduct to be applied in all its global operations.
"We have been working with colleagues at Chicken of the Sea in the US and MWBrands in Europe to adopt international best practices in our labour frameworks that will help us to fulfil the expectations of various stakeholders internally and externally across multiple locations," said Mr Wit.
Ranking among the largest seafood producers in the world, TUF has annual sales exceeding 100 billion baht and a global workforce of 32,000 people. Its brands include John West, Petit Navire, Parmentier and Mareblu.
Shares of TUF closed yesterday on the SET at 56 baht, down 75 satang, in trade worth 112 million baht.
