Telenor Group has signed an agreement with the Myanmar government to provide a nationwide mobile telecommunications service for 15 years.
The licence includes the 900-megahertz and 2.1-gigahertz spectra. The service will be launched within eight months.
"Myanmar people are ready for world-class mobile services and Telenor is ready to deliver," said president and chief executive Jon Fredrik Baksaas.
Myanmar represents a strong business opportunity for Telenor in Asia. Less than 10% of its population of 60 million have access to mobile services.
"Our licence is a product of an extensive consultation process with the Myanmar government and international organisations," said executive vice-president Sigve Brekke
"It now represents an acceptable framework that will go a long way to providing necessary long-term predictability for Telenor when it formally starts operations."
Telenor, which now has a workforce of 150, expects to hire 1,000 full-time employees in Myanmar by the year-end.
