Hmm propaganda, Phuket may have become a bit of a bad place, but compared with an other place in Thailand, it still seems to be a quiet place. See some headlines from Pattaya witch I found in the net. I know for a fact, that there has been much more going on in the last two weeks, but authorities do not want too many bad news being published.

“SPURNED GERMAN BAR-OWNER SLASHES PARTNER’S NECK IN PATTAYA BAR. The vindictive German co-owner of a Pattaya bar, outraged that his Thai partner had rejected him, sought vengeance, on 3 June 2009, by going to her new place of work, a beer bar in Soi 6, and slashing her neck in full view of customers and staff. He escaped immediately afterwards and police are still searching for him.”

“Wednesday 3rd June 2009 car full of English Tourists shot at during case of suspected road rage. Just after 5am on Wednesday Morning, Police Lieutenant Colonel T. from Pattaya Police Station was called to the Sukumvit Road close to the South Pattaya intersection to investigate the aftermath of a shooting incident”

“Monday 1st June 2009 one Dead, one seriously injured following Jomtien Beach Fight. On Sunday Afternoon, in front of hundreds of tourists, the two men came to blows and despite calls to Police suggesting a fight was about to start, officers arrived after the fight had finished despite the station being situated only 100 meters from the incident. Spikes which keep beach umbrellas from flying away in the wind and other weapons were used in the fight and both men received serious injuries during the scuffle and were rushed to Hospital. Mr N., died from his injuries in Hospital while Mr W. is fighting for his life and is on the critical list at this time.”

“In the afternoon of 1st June 2009 a 15-year-old female student was shot in the leg by a young man at a traffic intersection in North Pattaya.”

“Early in the morning of 28 May 2009, on a side soi off Pattaya Beach Road, an Englishman who four Thais apparently maintained had not paid one of them for her sexual services was severely beaten up, resulting in his hospitalization.”

“On 28 May, 2009, a young woman, living off Soi Thepphrasit, Pattaya, who had recently ended her relationship with a local motorbike taxi driver was set upon early in the morning by her ex-lover who, apart from beating her up, also attempted to rape her.”

“Wednesday 27th May 2009 Former Police Officer threatens rescue volunteer with gun during road rage incident in North Pattaya.”

“Monday 25th May 2009 Man seriously hurt following knife attack in Central Pattaya. Arriving at the scene, officers assisted a seriously injured man, later named as Khun Berm aged 25. He had been stabbed a total of 10 times in his upper body.”

“Early in the morning of 25 May 2009, Manhattan Restaurant, on Tappraya Road, one of Pattaya’s fine dining venues, was shot at five times by two teenage youths riding by on a motorcycle.”

“On 23rd May 2009 a British drug dealer made a dramatic escape and evaded capture by police while attempting to make a delivery in a car park in South Pattaya.”

“Reckless driving kills 2 British men, In the early hours of May 22nd, around 6.00am, police were notified of a fatal road accident that had just occurred in front of the Big C Supermarket on Second Road…”
“Monday 18th May 2009 Austrian drugged and robbed at Central Pattaya Apartment Complex. At the scene, the investigating officer was met by Mr. Marek Koperski aged 56 from Austria who revealed that earlier in the night he met a woman on Walking Street and invited her back to his apartment. She purchased two cans of beer at a local convenience store on the way to the apartment. When the couple arrived at the room, she offered one of them to Mr. Koperski who accepted the drink. He soon passed out and when he awoke he realized he had been robbed.”

“A police patrol passed by just at the right time to disperse a confrontation between a motorcycle gang of teenagers, armed with sticks, knives and guns, and a naval combat sergeant on his brand new motorcycle. At 8.20 p.m. on May 17 at the bus stop in front of Thammasiri Suksa Sattahip School, armed teenagers were threatening Sergeant…”

Well, make your own picture but do not forget, that this is only a small part of the things that really are going on.

Aussie family narrowly avoids drowning in Phuket
A family of Australian tourists who ignored red warning flags narrowly escaped drowning at Karon Beach on Tuesday afternoon.
Chalong Police identified the victims as Mr Samir Mourad, 58, his daughter Zeinab, 16, and Mr Mourad’s wife, whose first name and age were not reported.
According to the report, Mr Mourad was sunbathing while his wife and daughter entered the heavy surf, despite the fact that red warning flags were clearly visible in the area.

Do you mean he almost died from sunbathing?

Don't call this fatal shore the sunburnt country for nothing, eh?

Hardly a rescue sevice if they have to wait for family/friends to notify the police to notify them that a rescue is required, is it?

Ive been to Pattaya 3 times in my 10 years in Thailand. If u live in a gang infested red lite region expect trouble. Pattaya isnt run by a local Monk group of tea sippers. Chonburi is the head quarters for one of thailand's largest crime families. What do you expect?

CORRECTION MADE...rash of unsolved deaths of Farangs in many different parts of Thailand UN~solved.

I must agree with 7 Bth in his post
Myself I live in a beach front community here n Usa and have no reason to even frequent this deathly tourist trap.
Thailand has to many other safe wonders of beauty to visit and enjoy without the gang bangers and crime.

The vice president of the Phuket Tourist Association says the tourism industry has not been affected by the red shirt protests in Bangkok. Just remember, motorbikes in Phuket can be big trouble, especially for the new comer.

Phuket has gone to the dogs, from the taxis ripping you off at the airport to the tuk tuks ripping you off everywhere to the jetskis scamming you at every opportunity.

Stay away from the place, it's expensive.
