Resplendent in stylish new decor following a full-on makeover, JW Marriott’s JW Café has emerged from a renovation sabbatical with a tastefully refined aesthetic and updated menu that fittingly herald a new era of dining excellence at this long-established lower Sukhumvit Road property.

The warmly-lit, stone-and-polished-grain-detailed dining room exudes a welcoming, intimate vibe that feels more like a luxurious, ultramodern kitchen, with an industrial motif rendered in sleek marble counter tops and glowing wood floors. The intimate, easy-to-navigate space is a pleasure to browse, the efficiency of design keeping the impressive volume and variety of à la minute and prepared dishes well at-hand without leaving one feeling overwhelmed.

Having conceptualised and directed the extensive renovation project, JW Marriot Executive Chef Kevin B. Thomson also populated the Sunday Brunch menu with an inspired line-up of classic buffet fare complemented by some exciting and innovative all-you-can-eat offerings.

An example of how the buffet’s well thought-out design enhances the overall dining experience are the vertical chiller-shelf units used for cold dishes. Integrated into walls and column facings, the three-tiered displays are not only space-efficient, they also make choosing and self-serving more convenient.

While it is not unusual to find buffet veggie sections stocked with token, run-of-the-mill offerings that barely register a glance, here diners can choose from a thoughtfully curated selection of salads made with a wide variety of premium ingredients like exotic mushrooms and cheeses, marinated octopus and cauliflower that help add an extra measure of healthful nutrition to the house-original recipes.

At the carving station, thick slices of imported Prime Rib and bigger-than-your-fist sized Yorkshire puddings compete for attention alongside whole Norway salmon served in succulent slabs of fillet. Legions of Foie Gras sizzle on a grill, compote fruit toppings at the ready, while the selection of imported brand-name mustards confirms JW really knows its condiments. Notably, the cook-to-order pasta bar features a Parmesan wheel-bowl in which the Carbonara is prepared.

We are greeted with a chorus of sauces and grilled meats at the hot dish section, where the chicken and lamb dishes beckon flirtatiously with their mesmerising aromas. Chef Thompson explained that the serving pan portions are kept small and are frequently replenished to assure selections are always fresh and perfectly presented.

The well-stocked fresh seafood-on-ice table is brimming with top-grade imported crustaceans like king crab, river prawns, pre-shucked oysters and rock lobster, along with ocean-fresh sushi and sashimi. And if puckishness persists, there are numerous smaller stations offering Indian delights, Thai noodles, Chinese favourites plus premium cheeses, paper-thin sliced charcuterie and garden-fresh DIY salad makings. The comfort food masterpiece Hokkaido Cheese Potato Croquette goes on our Do Not Miss list for reasons that will be clear with your first bite. Trust us.

JW’s dessert spread is nothing short of mercilessly irresistible, starting with a selection of sliced cakes that includes a few surprise entries that dazzle with their originality (lookin’ at you, thinly-layered Chocolate Caraway Bottle Cake). But things really go all Willy Wonka at the live sweets counter, where house-made bread pudding with vanilla sauce and just-off-the-griddle crepes are whipped up on demand, as a chocolate fountain continuously self-decants its velvety-sweet cascade.

With a feast of such breadth and depth, leftovers are an unavoidable reality, with up to a third of the day’s menu never even leaving the kitchen. To avoid unnecessary waste and to make the world a better place, the hotel works closely with the Scholars of Sustenance (Thailand) Foundation to hygienically package and distribute leftover food to those in need.
