Myanmar art on show

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

A collection of political paintings by a Myanmar artist will be displayed at Thavibu Gallery for a month starting April 26.

Myint Swe’s ‘Burma: The Quiet Violence’ will be on show at Thavibu Gallery from April 26-May 24.

The “Burma: The Quiet Violence’’ exhibition features 38 paintings by Myint Swe that reflect the artist’s concerns about the detention of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the discouraging socio-political environment in Myanmar.

Due to their overtly political nature, the paintings were secretly transported to Bangkok, where they have been stored for years. As the environment in the country has now become more conducive to political discussion, Thavibu Gallery has decided to put the paintings on display.

Also, it is now safe for the 58-year-old artist to travel to Bangkok, something that would not have been possible before.

Swe’s work is strongly influenced by the paintings and philosophies of U Thein Han, one of the most important pioneers of Myanmar modern painting practices. He has participated in more than 50 exhibitions in Burma and showed his work in Thailand in 1999, 2001 and 2002.

‘Burma: The Quiet Violence’ will be on show at Thavibu Gallery from April 26-May 24. The gallery is located on the third floor of The Silom Galleria and opens Mon-Sat from 11am to 7pm. Call 02-266-5454.
