Pol Sub Lt Suporn Muangkai, duty officer at Vichit police station, received a report of the dumped baby girl at 11am.

The baby, wrapped in a towel, was found in a bag among the trash next to Chao Fa Road in tambon Vichit in Muang district of Phuket province.

Police suspected the infant was abandoned by her mother on the day she was born and had probably died just a few hours before the junk scavenger discovered her.

The infant's body was taken to hospital for a post-mortem examination and police were trying to track down the   mother.

Wan Rattanawilai, the 57-year-old junk dealer, told police she came across the bag while she was rummaging through the garbage for recyclable items. The trash bag was new and was zipped shut, she added.

When she unzipped it, she saw the baby, wrapped in a towel, lying still in a contorted position.
