The alleged theft occurred in 1980 while he was studying criminology in the US under a scholarship.

Pol Gen Pongsapat said the Royal Thai Police Office investigated this matter in 2000 and found the allegation was not true.

The former deputy police chief and secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) has been selected by the Pheu Thai Party to run in the Bangkok governor election scheduled for March 3.

The allegation he may have stolen a radio while in the US was raised during a press conference on Tuesday.
