YANGON - Myanmar election winner Aung San Suu Kyi and long-time former military junta leader Than Shwe met for more than two hours and discussed the country's future, sources said on Sunday.
The Friday meeting at military headquarters in the political capital Nay Pyi Taw was facilitated by Than Shwe's grandson, who met Suu Kyi two weeks ago.
Nay Shwe Thway Aung posted a message on Facebook about the meeting.
"He accepts that she will become the leader of the country," he said of his grandfather.
Than Shwe was military strongman during 1992-2011. Suu Kyi was held under house arrest for 15 years between 1989 and 2010.
A spokesman for the National League for Democracy told local media the meeting was productive.
"U Than Shwe recognizes NLD's victory, and discussed with chairperson Aung San Suu Kui about laying a solid foundation for democracy in the country," senior party official Win Htein said Sunday in Nay Pyi Taw.
The NLD won a landslide victory in the November parliamentary elections with more than two-thirds of the legislative seats.
The constitution bars her from becoming president due to her marriage to a foreigner and her children's British citizenship. Nevertheless, the undisputed party leader has vowed publicly to rule "from above the presidency."
