Illicit drugs worth B19bn incinerated

About 17 tonnes of drugs worth about 19 billion baht in total were burned in three provinces on Monday as the country joined the international community in fighting the illegal trade.

About 7.8 tonnes of amphetamine, or yaba, worth 17.5 billion baht and 1.5 tonnes of other drugs including heroin worth 1.5 billion baht were incinerated at Bang Pa-in Industrial Estate.

The main event marking the UN's International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was held in Bang Pa-in district in Ayutthaya under the supervision of Thawat Sunrajarn, an assistant to the public health minister. The drugs were seized in 65,000 cases and kept in the storage by the Food and Drug Administration before they were moved to the industrial park on Friday.

In Nakhon Phanom, about 5 tonnes of dried marijuana worth about 100 million baht were torched at a territorial defence student camp in Muang district and another 3 tonnes were torched at the compound of the Provincial Administration Organisation in Muang district.
