Elderly Brit assaulted over parking fee

A young Thai man has been arrested for assaulting a 70-year-old British man in Pattaya Klang in the fit of rage after he failed to collect a 40-baht-parking fee from him.

The assault occurred at a car parking area in the middle of Soi Buakao at 2.30pm on Sunday. The attacker, identified as Tossapon Tabprasit, 19, tried to flee on a motorcycle after striking John Hayward’s left arm with a wooden stick but was caught by a group of bystanders and residents, Thairath Online reported.

Pol Lt Yom Promsart, an investigator at Muang Pattaya police station, said Mr Tossapon told police the car park belonged to a Thai man known only as Aran and he was hired to collect fees from motorists of 40 baht a day.

He claimed Mr Hayward left his Chevrolet sedan on the premises for a while and when he returned he tried to drive out of the parking lot without paying him. Mr Tossapon said he knocked on the car window to urge Mr Hayward to pay, but the driver would not stop his vehicle and this angered him. He then shoved his foot into the driver's side door, grabbed a wooden stick and struck it forcibly on the vehicle and Mr Hayward's arm. The attack caused damage to Mr Hayward’s arm.

Witnesses, however, said Mr Hayward parked his car on the side of the road adjacent to the parking lot and went to a nearby convenience store. He refused to pay Mr Tossapon because he did not enter the parking area.

Mr Tossapon faces assault charges, Pol Lt Yom said.
