A Myanmar infant abducted in Tak province has been returned to her mother after a photo of the kidnapping went viral on social media, police said Friday.
The eight-month-old girl was taken in front of a game shop on Soi Ploenchit in Mae Sot district in Tak province by an unidentified woman Wednesday evening. The child was reunited with her mother Hakeema, 18, when a village headman in Mae Sot, identified only as Jormit, brought her to the police station after a bicyclist delivered her to his house last night, Thai media reported.
Jormit quoted the rider as saying that someone had hired him to bring the girl to his house. Hakeema later arrived at the police station to pick up her child.
Before the abduction, Hakeema had left the infant daughter with her uncle at the game shop while she ran errands. Shortly later, she returned to the shop to find the boy asleep in front of the store and the girl gone.
She immediately alerted police, who examined footage from closed-circuit television cameras. The CCTV captured an image of a woman, aged around 35 and believed to be from Myanmar, getting out of a white car and taking the girl. The car headed toward the Thai-Myanmar border.
A photo of the woman carrying the kidnapped girl was posted on social media and later went rival. Police believe the woman was a member of a kidnapping gang.
