Police in Kanchanaburi on Friday admitted that a 19-year-old female British tourist was raped in the province and said two suspects had been arrested.
Pol Maj Gen Kamolsanti Klanbus, chief of Kanchanaburi police, told a press conference that surveillance camera footage led police to the arrest of two young men who confessed to the rape. The victim had already returned to Britain.
He gave no other details of the case, saying that it was sensitive and could affect tourism. A more senior officer would decide what information to release.
Unconfirmed media reports in Thailand and overseas earlier detailed the attack. They said the young British woman ate and drank with some other tourists at a restaurant on Nanachart Road from Monday night until early Tuesday morning.
The woman was alone outside the restaurant about 1.30am when she was approached by two local teenagers on a motorcycle. She left with them, apparently believing they were taking her back to her hotel, the media reports said.
Later the woman informed police that the men raped and robbed her in a deserted area and then left her at a market of Kanchanaburi municipality. The crime scene is in Moo 1 village of Tha Lor sub-district in Tha Muang district.
