Tourist killing sparks gun crackdown

Surat Thani governor Chatpong Chatphut on Thursday vowed to implement more restrictive firearms control measures and will announce the province’s tourist spots as gun-free zones within a year, following the fatal shooting of a British tourist on Koh Phangan.

Mr Chatpong said after the shooting he had ordered police and provincial officers to carry out more stringent control measures in order to prevent the possession and carrying of all types of weapons in tourist places, including Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, the province’s two main attractions.

He said authorities will gradually stop renewing gun licences for gun owners and eventually licences will be phased out altogether.

@robins @15: I just read on the internet “The FBI estimates that there are over 200 million privately-owned firearms in the US”. Let’s assume “99% of guns are used in a lawful manner“, that leave 1% = 2,000,000 firearms which are used in not such a lawful manner. QED

@Robins D16 i usually agree with most of your posts but saying the American gun laws are to be proud of is ridiculous frankly. Very few countries have such a high per capita gun crime rate than the USA, and using them for sport / hunting is a hobby and not essential, and who do you need protection from also.
Thailand will do well to tighten up gun laws as guns are falling into the hands of more and more idiots in recent times, which shows numbers are growing and that current enforcement isn't working. Cracking down is sensible IMHO

So someone is shot with an ILLEGAL home made weapon. The governor decides to crack down on all legal gun owners. Is there something wrong with this logic? Why not go after the offenders, not the law abiding citizens?

@Discussion 9 What's so positive about it, 99% of guns are used in a lawful manner for protection or sport. Our gun laws are one of the few things about America I still admire and only a fool would voluntarily relinquish the fundamental right of self protection.

Guns should be kept locked and stored securely away from children and Thai men.

Best if they focus on getting the guns out of the hands of politicians and hi-so's. We know that will never happen. Just the poor folk.
