There was less flooding in many provinces - including Bangkok - on Friday, but weather forecasters expect heavy rain to continue nationwide until the end of this month.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said that from May 16 to 25, flooding affected about 21,000 families in 15 provinces. On Friday, conditions improved in 14 provinces, but floods engulfed Sukhothai province, leaving 405 villages under water.
Other flooded provinces included Ang Thong, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Lampang, Phichit, Phitsanulok and Samut Prakan. Low-lying areas were worst hit, including about 4,000 rai of paddy fields in Phichit.
In Bangkok, shallow flooding remained on some areas of Ratchadaphisek Road and in Lat Phrao district.
The Meteorological Department predicted heavy rain nationwide from Friday to Tuesday, with the deluge persisting in the North and the Northeast until Thursday.
The Royal Irrigation Department warned of more flooding in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok and Sutkhothai from Friday to Monday.
The department has increased water discharge at the Chao Phraya dam in Chai Nat province, and warned the move would impact downstream areas of the river basin from Sapphaya district of Chai Nat to Sena district of Ayutthaya.
