Department of Land Transport officials last month fined 1,283 drivers of taxis, public transport vans and motorcycle taxis across Bangkok for violating regulations. Most offenders were cabbies.
The department said on Sunday 809 taxi drivers were penalised, with most of the infringements being failure to undergo checks of their meters on the due date (318), while the least being refusal to take passengers (38).
DLT director-general Sanit Promwong said other offences included using illegal vehicles, failing to pay the annual vehicle tax and not displaying public vehicle driving licences.
Mr Sanit said 355 passenger van drivers were caught breaching regulations, of which half were penalised for speeding. The department also fined 119 motorbike taxi drivers, mostly for using unregistered motorcycles to run their service.
All offenders had been sent to a workshop aimed at raising awareness and improving their services to passengers. Repeat offenders could have their licences suspended or revoked, Mr Sanit said.
