Airport-bound bus erupts in flames at Lat Krabang

A fire destroyed a tour bus bound for Suvarnabhumi airport with about 20 passengers on the Lat Krabang elevated road on Monday morning, but nobody was hurt, according to media reports.

Pol Capt Ritthikrai Yomprakhon, deputy chief investigator of Lat Krabang police station, said the incident occurred shortly before 8am.

Three fire engines from Rachathewa tambon administration organisation were sent  to the scene. When they arrived the bus was engulfed in flames.

Police closed off three lanes to traffic, leaving only one lane open and causing a traffic jam.

The fire was brought under control in 20 minutes. The bus was deemed a write-off.

Ratana Jenraksa, the bus driver, said he was taking about 20 passengers from Samut Prakan to Suvarnabhumi airport. The engine compartment suddenly burst into flames.

He stopped the bus on the roadside and the passengers quickly alighted. Hen called for another bus to take the passengers to safety.

Mr Ratana said he tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire with a chemical extinguisher.

The closed lanes were quickly reopened to vehicles after the fire was extinguished and traffic flow soon returned to normal, police said.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
