Customers who have bought a Patrull safety gate from IKEA are advised by the company to return it to the store for a full refund after reports the lock may not be reliable.
The product recall also includes Patrull Klamma safety gate and extension and Patrull fast safety gates, the Swedish furniture giant announced on Thursday.
The items are sold at the IKEA store in Thailand and other countries.
The recall followed reports received by the company that some gates had unexpectedly opened and children had fallen down stairs. One of the incidents occurred in Thailand, but it was unclear whether the Thai case led to injury, it said on the website in Thailand.
"There is an incident reported from IKEA Thailand. A third party investigation has shown that the locking mechanism is not reliable, posing a risk for small children, despite approved tests to applicable standards," IKEA said.
"We cannot accept that there is a risk of injury while playing and as an immediate and precautionary action we recall all Patrull safety gates,” the website quoted Maria Thorn, acting business area manager at Children´s IKEA, as saying.
Buyers will receive a full refund and those with no receipt will get a gift card as an exchange, the company said.
It is the second time the furniture maker has recalled this product.
Last year the company recalled the safety gates for children after 18 incidents were detected worldwide, leading to three children being injured.
