Muslim post-haj Eid al-Adha set for Sept 12

The Office of the Chularatchamontri announced on Thursday evening that the Eid al-Adha festival, which marks the end of the annual Haj pilgrimage, will be celebrated on Sept 12.

The announcement was published on the official website of the Chularatchamontri, also known as Sheikhul Islam, the spiritual leader of all Thai Muslims. It said the annual event will begin on Sept 12 after experts failed to sight a moon after sunset on Thursday.

Thai Muslims and Muslims worldwide will celebrate the Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) marking the end of the Haj pilgrimage to Mecca and commemorating Prophet Abraham’s readiness to sacrifice his son to show obedience to God. They will slaughter sheep, cows and camels to feed the poor and needy during the festival.
