Thai pupils win haul of 36 maths medals

Thai pupils have bagged a total of 36 medals at a maths competition for primary schools in India, a senior education official said yesterday.

Karoon Sakulpradit, secretary-general of the Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec), said the 16 Thai pupils taking part in the Wizard at Mathematics International Competition 2016 won 27 gold medals and nine silver medals in individual and team categories.

The competition, which was held from Oct 23 to yesterday, featured 148 contestants and 37 teams from 12 countries -- the Philippines, Indonesia, South Africa, India, Nepal, Bulgaria, Iran, Tajikistan, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Nigeria and Thailand.

According to Mr Karoon, 11 Thai individuals won gold medals and five others took silver medals.

The gold winners are Warit Wiriyaprasitchai (Nakhon Pathom); Thanawat Techaniratsai (Bangkok); Napasorn Tangsrisakul (Suphan Buri); Teekrit Teekharatchatathanakul (Bangkok); Nattawat Temiamawanich (Bangkok); Worawat Rungaramsilp (Buri Ram); Wichpas Jindawimollert (Bangkok); Punnawit Thuwajit (Bangkok); Anawat Tannikorn (Maha Sarakham); Paramat Thewanaruemitkul (Chachoengsao); and Patachrapol Nawalertpanya (Surat Thani).

The silver medalists are Phuwarat Nakchanthuek (Nakhon Ratchasima); Supawich Promkhot (Sakon Nakhon); Pornpawit Puangruangkaew (Lampang); Thirachote Khoomman (Bangkok); and Pathon Phatmuk (Ratchaburi).

Another 12 golds and four silvers were won in team competitions while the four other gold medals were awarded for overall performance.

The Obec secretary-general congratulated all Thai medal winners for their performances at the event.

The young participants were selected by Obec from students across the country.

The medal winners were scheduled to arrive in Thailand last night.

Mr Karoon also urged the public to extend moral support to Thai students who are scheduled to compete in the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad for Primary School 2016 from Nov 8 to 13 in Indonesia.

He said Obec will continue to support Thai students to attend world competitions in sciences and mathematics.
