Pickup, bikes crash killing 3 boys

RAYONG -- Three boys were killed and two others injured after four motorcycles they were riding were hit from behind by two pick-up trucks on a road in Muang district early on Sunday.

Pol Capt Chanut Panthong, deputy investigator of Muang district police, said the accident occurred at about 1.20am on a road to Ploenchai 5 Housing Estate in Moo 2 village of tambon Thapma, involving four motorcycles and two pick-up trucks.

A police investigation revealed that while five boys were riding on four motorcycles along the road, two pick-up trucks which were trying to overtake them at about the same time hit the motorcycles from behind.

The four motorcycles were badly damaged, while the two pick-up trucks skidded off the road and ground to a halt in the median ditch.

Three boys, all 14 years old, who were riding on the motorcycles were killed and two others, aged 14 and 17, were injured. The injured were later admitted to Rayong Hospital.

Police were investigating the drivers of the two pick-up trucks -- Pornpat Thongbai, 34, and Kantana Muangsuwan, 34 -- to establish the cause of the accident.
