An investigation is underway to look into a fire that raged through a community in Bangkok’s Klong Toey area late Friday night, destroying 30 houses. No injuries were reported.
More than 30 fire trucks and firemen were deployed to Wat Saphan 1 canalside community in Klong Toey district to douse the fire, said Pol Capt Thanadet Chanmala, deputy investigation chief at Tha Rua police station. The fire was reported at around 9.20pm.
The blaze spread quickly through the community, which comprised mostly wooden houses built in a row. Residents rushed to move their belongings in panic. Firefighters took 45 minutes to bring the fire under control.
Pol Col Thanadet said 30 houses were destroyed in the fire. Police were investigating.
Nittaya Promphorchuenbun, 69, chairwoman of the community, said the fire broke out at a deserted home in the 150-house community. After being alerted, she immediately contacted firemen and police.
Klong Toey district authorities on Saturday turned a sports yard in a nearby area into a temporary shelter for residents left homeless by the fire. The damage had yet to be assessed.
