Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has appointed a police general the new Pattaya mayor in an order announced on Thursday.
The order, issued by the authority granted Gen Prayut under Section 44 of the interim charter, removed Pol Gen Anan Charoenchasri as interim deputy mayor and named him mayor of the resort town.
Pol Maj Gen Anan may appoint not more than four deputies, according to the order published in the Royal Gazette on Thursday and taking effect the same day.
The general, who will manage the resort city's 2017 budget worth 1.8 billion baht, will be in charge until an election is held for the position or the junta issues a new order revoking this one.
Pol Maj Gen Anan, formerly deputy chief of the Provincial Police Region 2 overseeing the eight eastern provinces, previously served as Pattaya's interim second deputy mayor in a council appointed by the Interior Ministry in 2016.
Shortly after 2014 coup, the junta banned all elections until further notice but allowed some existing provincial administrations to serve their terms.
For Pattaya, the term of the elected council led by Itthipol Khunploem ended in June 2016.
The Interior Ministry in the same year appointed 12 former government officials to the council. At their first meeting, the councillors chose Anant Angkanavisai, a former senior attorney at the Office of Chon Buri State Attorney as the interim mayor while Pol Maj Gen Anan was picked as the interim second deputy mayor.
