CHAI NAT: A surveyor of the Royal Irrigation Department was killed after ramming his pick-up truck into the rear of a lorry in Muang district of this Central province early on Sunday.

Somkid Wongchuen, the lorry driver, told police he was driving towards Suphan Buri on Highway 340 at about 60 kilometres per hour when he heard a loud noise from the rear end at about 4am.

After pulling over, he discovered that a pick-up truck had crashed into the rear of the lorry and called police.

Officers found the pick-up driver crushed to death behind the wheel. The airbag had inflated, and the vehicle was badly damaged. The man was identified from documents as Nathapong Somjaipeng, 25, a surveyor of the Royal Irrigation Department.

The lorry driver said he had been driving in the left lane, and speculated that the pick-up driver might have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Police were investigating.
