PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: A 10-wheel lorry went up in flames on Phetkasem Highway in Bang Saphan Noi district on Saturday night, causing about 2 million baht in damage.

Pol Capt Sam-ang Sukpat-anan, a Bang Saphan Noi police investigator, said the incident occurred at about 8pm at kilometre marker 414 on Phetkasem Highway near Ban Thung Sarisiat in tambon Sai Thong.

Jiraphan Buathongkua, 41, the lorry driver, said he was delivering goods worth more than 1 million baht from Bangkok to a client in Phuket.

After passing kilometre marker 414, he saw white smoke emerging from the rear of the lorry. He quickly stopped the vehicle on the side of the road.

He found the fire had started in the cargo hold and spread quickly to engulf the vehicle.

When fire engines from the Chaiyarat tambon administration organisation arrived, the fire had destroyed much of the lorry and its cargo, causing more than 2 million baht in damage.

Mr Jiraphan said he was stunned by the incident, and had no idea how the blaze had started.

Police were investigating to establish the cause of the fire.
