Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, wife of the late King Rama IX, made merit on the occasion of her 86th birthday anniversary on Sunday - Thailand's Mother's Day.

The Bureau of the Royal Household released pictures of the royal activities with a message that Her Majesty the Queen made merit in a private ceremony at the Chitralada Royal Villa in Bangkok on Sunday afternoon.

Also present were her children -- His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn -- as well as her grandchildren, HRH Princess Bajrakitiyabha, HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana and HRH Prince Dhipankara Rasmijoti, according to the bureau.

Her Majesty made merit as people nationwide organised special activities to mark her birthday and honour her great contributions to the nation.

The activities started with alms-giving to Buddhist monks in the morning, followed by volunteer activities including cleaning, planting and free meals for the public in provincial downtown areas.

Ceremonies and activities to honour Her Majesty continued on Sunday evening. In addition, His Majesty the King granted approval for a grand merit-making event for Her Majesty and the late King Rama IX at the Royal Plaza on the evening of Aug 17.
