The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) on Thursday appointed the Venerable Vudhijaya Vajiramedhi, a highly respected Buddhist monk and HRH Princess Sarah Zeid of Jordan as its first two patrons to recognise their advocacy and awareness-raising work on behalf of millions of refugees.

The honourary title is given to those who support the UNHCR and its mission by sharing knowledge and information about refugees with the public.

Their role is to influence public opinion, change negative attitudes towards refugees and encourage others to support the organisation's initiatives.

Kelly Clements, the UN Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees, presented certificates to the patrons, officially marking their appointments at a special ceremony in Geneva.

The Venerable Vudhijaya Vajiramedhi is known for his innovative approach to Buddhist teachings and for his strong advocacy of peace and compassion towards fellow human beings through his "We are one, we are the world" concept.

He has also supported UNHCR's "Nobody Left Outside" shelter campaign by hosting awareness and fundraising events to help raise enough money to shelter two million refugees in 12 countries including Jordan, Lebanon, Rwanda and Chad.
