PM affirms Sor Por Kor land plot stance

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha reiterated that Sor Por Kor land plots cannot be sold or transferred for financial gains on Monday.

"It is best for farmers to keep their Sor Por Kor plots for agricultural purposes," said Gen Prayut.

Gen Prayut made the remark as he handed Sor Por Kor land documents to 10 farmers in Saraburi's Chalerm Prakiat district.

Sor Por Kor plots are state-owned land that are given to landless farmers to be cultivated.

The remark is a response to a campaign promise floated by a group of Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) politicians, including Somsak Thepsutin and Suriya Jungrungreangkit, who said that if elected, PPRP will put its weight behind a new land policy that would allow Sor Por Kor document holders to seek commercial gains from their plots.

Under their proposal, Sor Por Kor documents will be upgraded to title deeds, which will let land holders to transfer their land for financial benefits.

The Sor Por Kor scheme is designed to aid poor, landless farmers. About 2.8 million households have joined the scheme, and approximately 35 million rai of land have been distributed to eligible households.

Existing laws prohibits the commercial transfer of Sor Por Kor lands, except to next-of-kin or if willed to a legal heir. Each family can receive a maximum of 50 rai of land, which must only be used for farming.

Meanwhile, Gen Prayut on Monday also called on voters to "make the right decisions" when they go to the ballot on March 24.

He said political parties and politicians must give out the necessary details when they propose policies or projects on the campaign trail.

"It's really out of fashion for politicians to just say their proposals out loud while leaving out the important details," said Gen Prayut.

"They will have to say how they will do it, and where the funds will come from," he added.
