Five provinces have reported no road fatalities during this year's Songkran holidays, as the '7 dangerous days' road safety campaign reaches its final day on Wednesday.

The Road Safety Directing Center reported that Trang, Phangnga, Mae Hong Son, Sukhothai and Ang Thong provinces have recorded no deaths since the seven-day safety campaign for the Thai New Year holidays started last Thursday.

Driving over the speed limit and drink-driving remained the top two causes of accidents, while motorcycles dominated the types of vehicles involved in accidents.

Nakhon Ratchasima and Udon Thani led the death toll with 15 persons each and Chiang Mai had the most accidents with 119.

The government has set up about 2,000 checkpoints and deployed more than 65,000 officials and volunteers on roads across the country in an attempt to curb traffic violations and reduce the number of accidents during the festivities.

Department of Probation chief Prasarn Mahaleetrakul told reporters on Wednesday that strict enforcement of traffic laws would continue until the end of the campaign.

The official promised that no holidaymakers using public transport would be left behind as they return to Bangkok from their home provinces or holiday destinations.

The number of traffic accidents, deaths and injuries dropped this year compared with the Songkran period a year ago, but Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said he was not satisfied with the statistics.

Gen Prayut said government agencies will convene after the end of the campaign to evaluate the situation and come up with additional measures to reduce accidents and loss of life in the future. Decisive action must be taken on traffic violators, he added.
