CHANTHABURI — Police have arrested a 61-year-old mentally ill man on charges of killing and dismembering his nephew before dumping the body parts in a canal.
Police apprehended Yos Chankaew while he was on his way to the home of a relative who had been asked to arrange for the man’s surrender.
Mr Yos was suspected of brutally killing Thaworn Intachan, 41, at a noodle shop near Chanthaburi provincial stadium in Muang district, where both men worked. Thaworn’s dismembered body was discovered in a nearby canal on Sunday.

Mr Yos allegedly confessed to the killing of his nephew in a fit of rage. He said he had been drinking alcohol with Thaworn before the incident. Thaworn was drunk and had demanded Mr Yos pay back some money he had borrowed. The request upset Mr Yos and the men began arguing and fighting. Mr Yos said he could not beat his nephew who is a lot younger and felt vengeful after the brawl.
He then clubbed Thaworn in the head with a sledge hammer while he was sleeping, cut his body into five pieces and threw them into the canal.
Mr Yos was reported to appear absent-minded and nervous by police. His relatives earlier said the man had mental problems.
