The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) is demanding that the media reports news in a straightforward manner that does not confuse the public or lead to conflicts in society.
Lt Gen Suchart Pongphut, director-general of the Signal Directorate and secretary of the NCPO's committee responsible for inspecting news publications, made the demand during talks with editors and representatives of the print and broadcast media yesterday.
The meeting was chaired by NCPO deputy director Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew, who also serves as the Social Development and Human Security Minister.
Lt Gen Suchart insisted the talks were not intended to threaten the media.
He said news media and columnists play a leading role in helping to maintain order in the country by presenting news in a fair manner.
He demanded reporters use plain language when writing or reporting news to ensure their audience and readers understand it.
Lt Gen Suchart admitted Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has been worried by news headlines.
He said the premier wants reporters to report news in a positive way that will help heal the divisions of the past and to promote reconciliation among people in society.
