CHIANG MAI — A Spanish man died after he fell from a popular waterfall in front of his girlfriend in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park on Thursday.
The accident occurred on the third level of Mon Tha Than Waterfall, which has nine levels including one at 730 metres above sea level and known as Sai Yoi Waterfall.
Police said the man was standing on the edge of a cliff to take photos of the waterfall when he slipped, falling a dozen metres to the rocks below. His body was then carried by the water and stranded on the second level of the waterfall. His girlfriend alerted park officials.
Police said the man succumbed to his injuries shortly after the plunge. Rescue workers took about an hour to retrieve his body after arriving the scene due to the steep and rugged rocky slope.
The man's name has not been released until his relatives have been notified.
