SATUN — Two foreign male tourists, a Swiss and a German, died after their chartered songthaew (a modified pickup truck with two rows of seats for passengers) veered off a winding road in Khuan Don district on Thursday.
The accident occurred on Wang Prachan-Kuan Sator Road in tambon Wang Prachan when a white Isuzu songthaew driven by Somjit Atthokorn, 54, was enroute from a Thai-Malaysian border checkpoint in Satun to Trang province in the afternoon.
Police said the two tourists and four other people were on board the chartered songthaew when Mrs Somjit failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the road.
The crash, which caused heavy damage to the front of the vehicle, killed a 65-year-old Swiss passenger instantly. Three other passengers were injured including a 55-year-old German, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police charged Mrs Somjit, a Trang native, with reckless driving causing death.
