Residents revel, police watch their homes

More than 4,000 homes, about 1,400 of them in Bangkok, have been left in the care of the police during the Songkran holidays.

Deputy national police chief Pongsapat Pongcharoen said the 4,212 homes have registered under the nationwide campaign "Leaving Home with the Police".

Of the total, 1,470 homes are in Bangkok and the rest in the provinces.

In Bangkok, the Chokechai police station is the busiest, taking care of 60 homes.

Elsewhere, the Provincial Police Region 1, with jurisdictions over the Central Plains provinces, is looking after 694 homes, the highest number under the campaign.

Police conduct routine patrols and make a record that they have checked in at the neighbourhoods where the houses are located.

Most home owners registered with the police said they will return tonight, which is the last day of the Songkran long weekend, Pol Gen Pongsapat said.

No burglary or disturbances were reported in areas where the registered homes are located, he said.

In the areas supervised by the Metropolitan Police Bureau, the campaign uses the Line chat application and the QR Code system to communicate with the home owners.

Pol Gen Pongsapat said the campaign will be assessed and burglary and theft cases reviewed after the Songkran festival.
