Leaders unite over illegal fishing battle

Thailand and Indonesia will set up a working group to tackle illegal fishing as a side issue at the Asian-African Leaders Summit in Jakarta.

The talks were held on the sidelines of the summit, which is discussing economic cooperation between 77 nations. Illegal fishing was also raised.

The agreement was reached yesterday in a meeting between Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Indonesian President Joko Widodo, government spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp said.

Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon and Foreign Minister Tanasak Patimapragorn are part of the Thai delegation joining the working group, he said.

Indonesia has assigned its Marine Affairs and Fisheries minister to join.

The working group is being formed to coordinate efforts in combating illegal fishing and lay out long-term plans to address the problem, Mr Yongyuth said.

The government wants to tackle illegal fishing in international waters, and the issue has been raised as one of its national agenda items, the spokesman said.
