All Thai nationals in Kathmandu were reported safe after a powerful earthquake struck the Nepalese capital on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry said.

The Thai Embassy checked on 60 Thais staying in Kathmandu and found all were safe, although some were slightly injured, the ministry said.

About 100 Thais work in Nepal. About 26,000 tourists from Thailand visit the country every year mainly on pilgrimages to Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha.

Thai diplomats were checking on Thai tourists in Pokhara, a popular destination for foreign visitors to the Annapurna area, the ministry added.

The 7.9-magnitude quake struck 80 kilometres northwest of Kathmandu just before noon local time. The capitel sustained severe damage with scores of buildings toppled and hundreds of people reported dead as of Saturday night.
