CHIANG MAI — A fire damaged at least two shops at the Varoros market in downtown Chiang Mai on Friday.

The blaze started at CM Bazar, a four-storey fabric shop, at 5.35pm at the popular market before spreading to an adjacent shop, said Pol Maj Gen Montree Sumboonyanond, chief of the provincial police force.

Fighters from the Chiang Mai Municipality are at the scene and are trying to control the blaze.

It was the second fire at the market in less than a month. Another building at Varoros caught fire on May 17.
