Mers steps tighten at M'sian border

Tourist-screening measures have been broadened at three border checkpoints with Malaysia as a precaution against the spread of the Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers).

Tourists from Malaysia passing through the three checkpoints at Sadao, Padang Besar and Nathawi in Songkhla are subject to thermal screening.

Hand cleaning gel is also distributed to all tourists arriving through these checkpoints.

Dr Paithoon Wongsakul, a doctor at Sadao checkpoint, said special attention is being given to tourists from Mers-risk countries such as Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and South Korea.

The measures will continue to be taken until the Mers concern has eased, he said.
