SARABURI — A major subsidence has been found on a section of a road in Nong Khae district that has severely disrupted traffic.

The subsidence -- three metres deep and 300 metres long -- was found between kilometre markers 16 and 17 on the Nongkae-Nong Sua Road in tambon Nong Rong.

Prakit Meprem, president of the Nong Rong tambon administration organisation, said on Sunday the road runs along Rapeepat canal where water levels were decreasing due to the drought and it had caused the soil along the canal to collapse. He believed the subsidence may have been caused by the canal drying up.

Mr Prakit said cracks were first seen on Saturday night along a distance of 200 metres. The subsidence expanded today and covered almost the four metres-wide road, with the deepest spot measured at three metres.

He said the road has been closed to traffic and no one is reported to have been hurt. Motorists were directed to use a road on the other side of the river.
