Three days of heavy rain resulted in flooding in border markets on both sides of the Sai River, in Mae Sai district of Thailand's Chiang Rai province and Myanmar's Tachilek town, on Tuesday morning.
Shop owners at the Sailom Joy market on the Thai bank of the border river hurriedly moved their merchandise to high ground as the river level rose about 4.5 metres.
Floodwater was deeper, about 30 centimetres, at the Tha Lor market in low-lying Tachilek. Local authorities feared the water would further rise with the continuing rain.
Workers were removing trapped logs, driftwood and weeds from the pillars of the bridge across the Sai River there to protect its structure.
