SURAT THANI -- A 31-year-old Croatian man on his honeymoon died after falling off a steep waterfall in Koh Samui district.

Identified as Tomislav Laco, the man plunged the equivalent of eight stories from a viewing area about two-thirds the way up the 39-metre-tall Khun Si waterfall in tambon Mae Nam, Pol Cap Sirachat Kamunee, a duty officer at Koh Samui police station said.

Police and rescue workers rushed to the waterfall after being alerted around 6pm on Wednesday. They rappelled about 25 metres to the bottom of the waterfall and found the body of the victim, wearing only shorts, lying on the rocks.

He had sustained a fatal head wound and other injuries.

The man's Croatian wife, Danie Magan, 26, told police that she and her new husband were honeymooning on Koh Samui, staying at a bungalow in tambon Maret. They had been touring the island's natural beauty on bicycles.

They had spent the day at the waterfall and were taking photos before the accident. He had walked around alone to survey the waterfall while she was writing. She then said she heard something fall and could not find her groom.

She then looked over the precipice to see him lying at the bottom.

Pol Capt Sirachat said police took the body of the man to Koh Samui for a post-mortem examination and would  summons his wife for further interrogation and notify the Croatian embassy about the death.
