High waves keep 500 boats in Trat ashore

TRAT -- Strong winds and high waves have kept more than 500 fishing boats ashore at various landing piers in Khlong Yai district for over two days.

The boats have been anchored mostly in tambon Ao Yai and tambon Hat Lek.

Apart from fishing boats, cargo boats destined for Cambodia and Vietnam have also been forced to stay inshore. Coincidently, it is time for all boat opertors to stop their business to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Early on Sunday, waves about 2 metres high damaged one house along the shoreline and sunk two fishing boats. Nobody was reported hurt.

Supornthip Ngaomuk, the owner of the house, said it happened shortly after midnight. She had informed the chief of tambon Ao Yai of the incident.

Sutham Bunditsathien and Chalao Raktua, the owners of the two boats, said they would try to salvage their vessels after the strong winds and waves subside.
