Nok Air cancelled 61 flights on Friday but its chief executive officer Patee Sarasin explained it was the new flight schedule taking effect a little early this year, and there would be no more disruptions.
With the low-cost airline reportedly facing pilot shortages, needing to improve pilot standards and cancelling hundred of flights since mid-February, Nok Air cancelled 34 domestic flights from Don Mueang and 27 inbound flights on Friday.
Services in the Northeast were the most affected.
Of flights from Don Mueang, 13 were destined for the Northeast, 11 for the North and 10 for the South, with 11 flights to Don Mueang cancelled from the Northeast and eight each from the North and the South.
An official of Don Mueang airport said on the condition of anonymity that the cancellations were routine and travellers were not affected, because those flights were already unavailable when they were making reservations.
On Friday Nok Air used eight charter flights operated by Thai Lion Air and Thai Smile on routes to Ubon Ratchathani, Chiang Mai, Udon Thani and Surat Thani provinces.
Nok Air CEO Patee explained via instant messaging that Friday's cancellations resulted from its new flight schedule, which took effect in January. Passenger services were not affected on Friday thanks to flights arranged with partner airlines, he said.
He denied the cancellations had anything to do with the abrupt cancellation of many flights due to the absence of pilots, which affected many thousands of travellers, on Feb 14.
He also forwarded a tweet from his airline, saying that Nok Air would not cancel more flights than earlier announced and that its problems would be solved in the near future.
