Five female workers were killed when a building collapsed during construction in Krabi province on Friday, Thai media reported.
The multi-purpose training facility is being built at the Institute of Physical Education - Krabi Campus, on Sri Trang Road, Muang district.
The 30-by-30-metre second floor of the structure was being paved with 30cm-thick concrete when the entire floor gave.
After rescue officials and workers removed the debris, they found the bodies of Jintranon Saikaew, 25, of Rayong; Katchaleeya Jandeewan, 22, of Udon Thani; Yad Kokorn, 42, of Udon Thani; Varin Ratchabut, 31, of Phatthalung; and Linthong Promsuwan, 37, of Udon Thani.
Workers told police there were 23 labourers working in the structure. The five female victims were clearing the ground floor when the upper floor collapsed.
It was speculated that the scaffolds might have been unable to support the concrete weight. Police are bringing in experts to determine the exact cause.
Ekapornpan Enterprise Pte was contracted to build the three-storey structure in 710 days within a budget of 98 million baht. The institute was a unit under the Tourism and Sports Ministry.
