The government has asked people to refrain from using hoses and carrying water tanks on pickup trucks during the Songkran festival next month.
A source at Government House said the call is part of a campaign to encourage people to throw water sensibly to help battle the country's drought crisis.
Venues for splashing water will be designated while the period of water-throwing activities and the permitted water volume will be limited, the source said.
Vallop Suwandee, chief adviser to the Bangkok governor, said Wednesday that City Hall will reduce water-throwing activities in Silom Road down from three days last year to two days, April 13-14.
Water throwing will take place from 12pm to 9pm.
Water filling stations and water tunnels will not be available. Large and powerful water guns, alcoholic drinks and rucksacks will also be prohibited.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said a campaign to prevent traffic accidents by temporarily seizing the vehicles of drink-drivers will also be in place during the festival.
According to the prime minister's order, issued on Dec 30 last year under Section 44 of the interim charter, authorities can also temporarily seize the licences of drink drivers for up to 30 days and impound their vehicles for at least seven days.
Drink drivers may also be arrested and detained, and sent to a behavioural adjustment programme for up to 15 days.
The road safety campaign comprises boosting traffic discipline among motorists, and imposing measures to prevent road accidents and casualties during the Songkran period.
