Six people were injured, one seriously hurt, when a Bangkok garbage truck hit four taxis and a motorcycle in Huai Khwang district Thursday morning.

The big green Bangkok Metropolitan Administration trash hauler smashed into four Toyota Altis taxis on Chaturathis Road near the Royal City Avenue entertainment district at about 6am. The truck and a taxi also ran over a Honda motorcycle.

The inbound side of the road was totally blocked and police had to open an opposing lane to relieve congestion. It took about an hour for rescue workers to clear the road.

The injured included five men and a woman. The seriously injured man was taxi driver Uthis Yosaphan. He was taken to nearby Piyavate Hospital.

Kittipong Pengrak, the 31-year-old trashman, blamed brake failure for the accident. He said he could not avoid the taxis because another vehicle was passing his truck at that moment.

Police could not find his driver's licence and he was taken to the Makkasan police station for interrogation. He tested negative for blood alcohol.
