PRACHIN BURI -- A fire which started at a garbage dump in Kabin Buri district early on Tuesday night was still burning over a 20-rai area on Wednesday, sending foul smelling smoke billowing over a wide area.
Firefighters were spraying water to prevent the fire from spreading while awaiting the arrival of extra equipment.
Six fire engines from tambon administration organisations and municipalities in the area were despatched to the scene to wet down the huge pile of refuse and contain the flames.
Their task was made more difficult by the size of the huge landfill, which stands three to four metres high.
Kumpol Srimethakul, an official of Kabin Buri district, said the fire was probably self combustion, caused by the extreme heat and drought.
