Bangkok kids a 'high obesity risk'

Primary school students in Bangkok have a higher risk of developing heart disease than their counterparts in other provinces as an annual survey found 66% of them were suffering from high cholesterol and 20% from obesity, a nutrition expert warned.

Dr Chutima Sirikulchayanon, a lecturer at Mahidol University’s Faculty of Public Health, said on Thursday the survey was carried out recently in four public elementary schools in the capital as part of Thai Health Promotion Foundation's (THPF) ongoing initiative to develop school models for healthy children, Daily News newspaper reported.

Dr Chutima said the latest findings were close to the alarming results of previous surveys conducted between 2004-2006 that showed 78% of young schoolers, on average, in the capital were diagnosed with high cholesterol and 20% were obese.

Eating horsemeat hamburgers instead of beef hamburgers could help.

expect more obese children as Thai people are becoming rich and are lazy to work. They are fun of eating fat foods same as western people whom they idolizes. Hi-so are more or less the victims here.

Mama and Coke arent a food group .Look at the non stop instant processed food they eat and combine that with sitting around playing computer games or watching TV .It isnt really a surprise . You can tell how much a parent values their kid by what they feed them .

My school, out in the country, has just installed a fancy new coffee house/ice cream parlor. It, along with every other food vendor on campus, is open all day long. Our students are constantly eating from the time they arrive at school until they leave. It is, for the most part, junk food high in sugars and fats. Of course someone is making a fortune off of this business and that's all that really matters isn't it?

Mama is horribly unhealthy, but has become the staple of urban society. Western fast food carries some kind of status here, as well as carcinogens, transfats and saturated fats.

Thailand is going to suffer the same fate as Western kids if parents think that pocket money is the only expression of love.

Good eating habits and discipline begins at home and is the sole responsibility of the parents !
Perhaps junk food giant chains should consider the health risks of their clients !!
